What’s the joy of travelling if you can’t enjoy new and unusual experiences? Either you are travelling for fun, a wedding, or your honeymoon, travelling is all about experiencing. For you, the adventurous spirits out there that want to enjoy your lives to the fullest, there is a country that will blow your mind with its diversity of wholesome, unexpected surprises. We are talking about none other than Iceland!

Iceland has become a global sensation with its breathtaking natural scenery, often called “the land of fire and ice”. Imposing waterfalls, magical ice caves, refreshing lagoons, and other spectacular natural sights are to be spotted around the country, and they are truly a spectacle to admire, even if you are a city-trotter. No wonder why Iceland ranks among the top 10 destinations in every traveler’s bucket list.

As a Luxury Hotel in Iceland, we have decided to share our knowledge about our country, and make a list with the top things to do. Let’s dive into the top things to do in Iceland, one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in Europe, and maybe the world!

Go on Ice Cave Exploration

The Ice Caves of Iceland have a peculiarity; You can never walk into the same ice cave twice, as they tend to melt during spring and summer. This is why we cannot recommend a specific cave, but we urge to go on cave exploration in some of the areas where the ice caves usually form. Your best bet is at Vatnajokull Ice Caves, found at the largest ice cap in Europe. With a glacier up to 1000 meters thick in certain places, it’s only natural that this is, by far, the most impressive ice cave spot in Iceland.

On the other hand, the Ice Caves at the north east highlands of Vatnajokull are also great for exploration. This is actually a mountain range with active volcanoes that create a geothermal activity. This, results in the creation of ice chambers, where sometime hot river flows beneath them. The only drawback is that you have to hike for 3km from Sigurðarskáli to reach these caves. However, they are definitely worth the effort.

Experience the Lava Falls Adventure Tour

This is an activity for the few. The Lava Falls Adventure takes you into the depths of The Lava Tunnel, at the stunning Laval? Falls. Adventure-seekers love this tour and a good physical health is required in order to take it. It lasts for 3-4 hours and the only light during the tour comes from the head torches. Hiking boots with ankle support are essential, alongside warm clothes and a backpack with water and snacks.

If you don’t feel like going all the way down to the falls, then you can take the standard lava tunnel tour, which takes you to about 350m in the cave. The Evening Lava Tunnel Tour is also wonderful, as, if you are lucky, you can also watch the aurora, while walking through this long tunnel.

Go Waterfall Chasing – Yes, that’s a thing in Iceland

Iceland’s north Atlantic climate has led to the creation of an abundance of breathtaking waterfalls, thus the pretty unique activity: waterfall chasing. Of course, winter snow will add another layer of difficulty in your waterfall chasing experience, so it’s highly recommended to perform this activity during late spring/summer. There are various waterfalls in Iceland found off-the-beaten-path, but we recommend that you stick to the more accessible ones. Seljalandsfoss, Hraunfossar, Skogafoss, Bruarfoss, and Godafoss are among the most popular waterfalls to visit.

Take an In-Water Massage at the Blue Lagoon

Visiting the Blue Lagoon is a unique and must-live experience by itself. And, trust us, nothing beats a deep, relaxing mineral massage at the already-soothing waters of Blue Lagoon. If you are just doing it for the experience, 30 minutes will be enough to do the work. If you want to relax but not spend too much time in the hot waters, the 60 minutes option is the best. And, if you want to feel your body cleansed, nourished and radiant, the 120 Minutes Signature Massage is the only way to do it right.

Of course, the massage is an addition to the Blue Lagoon experience. To enter the lagoon, you can pick either the Comfort or Premium Package. We recommend the premium one as it includes an extra mask of your choice, slippers, bathrobe, reservation at the gourmet Lava Restaurant plus sparkling wine.

Walk through the rich Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

The nature reserve “Hornstrandir” found in the Westfjords is like a “living” museum of flora, boasting 260 different species of flowering plants and ferns, and covering an area of 580 square kilometres.  Since the 1950s, humans cannot reside in the area, allowing the place to flourish.

Arctic Foxes, the most prominent mammal in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, obviously protected from hunting, like to approach tourists for a bite to eat. The area is also home to a rich bird life, with many nesting species like puffins and black guillemots.

Travel back in time at the Viking World Museum

Are you by any chance fan of the Vikings TV Series and you would love to learn more about Norse Mythology and Vikings? This is the best place to be! Viking World Museum travels you back in time in the Viking Age with its replica of a Viking Ship from the 9th Century (you can discover it inside out), and the various exhibitions back from that age. There is even a special section on the Norse Mythology!

Iceland: The land of adventure!

From waterfall chasing, to vikings’ history exploration and excursions in Iceland’s rich landscapes, these are certainly the best things to do in  this fascinating country.  However, we are sure that you have noticed that a certain, most popular activity, is  missing from our list: Aurora Hunting.  For this exciting experience, we have created a special article on Aurora Hunting on Travel by Interest, which we highly recommend you to check out.

Make sure to include at least some of the above activities in your trip planning,  as well as from the this list of tons of other things do in Iceland! And, as always, we are at you full disposal for helping you pick the right experiences for you and plan your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Iceland!
